Encoders and Decoders

KEVN uses a wide variety of EAS Encoders. Both Analog and Digital. This page will give information about our equipment and also some general information. Here you’ll see the equipment that does the work behind the scenes!

Sage Digital Endec 3644

The Sage Digital Endec is the main encoder/decoder that we are currently using. This unit is CAP Compliant and has the latest firmware update which is FPGA version 54, Revision 95 (Rev 95), CR-Rev6, P4 configuration as of July 2, 2021. This unit was acquired on October 18, 2022. I can control it via front panel, special software or the web interface. The Monitor sources are as follows:

CAP Monitor: IPAWS Open CAP

Monitor 1: WXK68 162.550 MHz (feed from Eton FRX3+)

Monitors 2-6: Any AM/FM/NOAA sources via internet stream. (This is available for monitoring for severe weather whenever need be) Via VLC Media.

For more information about what is sent, please consult the Relay Criteria page on this site.

Digital Alert Systems DASDEC-II IR

The priciest model of all DASDEC IIs, the Intelligent Remote or IR for short. My second DASDEC II that actually works. Currently I am utilizing one built-in radio to monitor KBSU 90.3 FM (Another Boise LP-1). As for anything CAP wise, I have IPAWS Open and NAAD CAP Canada on this unit. Like the digital only a bit more complex. Formerly owned by PhoenixEAS and operated as KAZP IP.

Digital Alert Systems DASDEC-II LCR (Formerly)

DASDEC II (Number 2), This one is the Low Cost Radio version, however the unit was unfortunately faulty upon arrival. This is the LCR model with 2 built in radios. They were supposed to monitor WXK68 and KBSX 91.5 FM (Boise, ID). This unit is also CAP Compliant and is no longer in my possession. This unit also has a web interface. I acquired this unit on September 25, 2022 from Houston, Texas. Former station is unknown.

Sage EAS Endec 1822

The secondary encoder I have is a Sage EAS Endec 1822 (The Original Grey Box). I acquired this unit on April 13, 2022 from KHWG in Fallon, Nevada. This was the main endec KEVN was using for quite some time. Monitors are currently not in use. Included with the unit was also the Sage EAS Endec Remote Software, which might be used on the Sage Digital instead.

Trilithic EASyPLUS

Third on the list is a well known and recognizable encoder, that being the Trilithic EASyPLUS. I acquired this unit on July 21, 2022 from a cable provider located in Oklahoma. Included is 2 built in radios (both in use) and a Character Generator. Probably my most favorite screen of all EAS Screens since I was 7. Monitors in use include:

Built in Radio 1: WXK68 162.550 MHz

Built in Radio 2: KBSX 91.5 MHz

Monitor 1: Input from Sage Digital Endec.

Monitor 2 is not in use at the moment.

Time and Frequency Technology (TFT) EAS 911

The first EAS Endec used by KEVN. The TFT EAS 911. This unit was acquired on April 3, 2022. Former station is unknown. Monitor are currently not in use. It was calibrated in October of 1997. An amazing piece of EAS History. About as old as the EAS itself!
